An exploring App for every outdoor walking and running lover.

Design Thoughts:

As a dedicated orienteering enthusiast, I have always been captivated by the exhilarating sport of Orienteering, which combines physical exercise with critical decision-making skills. However, I recognized the challenge of integrating orienteering into people's daily routines. Motivated by this, I embarked on a journey to simplify orienteering's intricacies and infuse them into daily physical activities. The outcome of this endeavor is "Oringo," a sports app designed to introduce people to orienteering, enabling them to practice and hone their skills while simultaneously enjoying outdoor walks and runs.

Problem:

The central challenge I aimed to address with Oringo was how to seamlessly incorporate orienteering into people's daily exercise routines, such as walking and running.

Research:

  • Orienteering, a sport rooted in Swedish origins, involves navigating from point to point while in constant motion, using a map and compass. The player's performance is typically assessed based on the number of correct points reached and the time taken to complete the course.

    • A lack of widespread awareness: Orienteering remains relatively obscure among the general population, with many mistakenly associating it with hiking or cross-country activities.

    • Limited exposure: Conversations with more than ten friends over several years revealed that only a couple had prior experience with orienteering, typically during their high school years.

    • Popularity in select regions: Orienteering boasts international recognition, having been included in the World Games since 2001. Globally, approximately 80 countries participate in the International Orienteering Federation. For instance, the Swedish Orienteering Federation comprises about 600 clubs with a collective membership of 83,000 individuals.

User Persona:

Meet Winston, a 26-year-old medical student who embraces physical exercise for reasons of enjoyment, social engagement, health, and relaxation. Although he lacks experience in orienteering, Winston is eager to explore new ways of staying active and is comfortable with incorporating technology into his exercise routines.

Design Elements:

  • Wireframes: Oringo's wireframes illustrate the user experience and flow of the application.

  • Color Palette: Oringo's color scheme draws inspiration from orienteering maps and point markers, creating a visually engaging experience for users.

  • Logo Design: The Oringo logo captures the essence of the app, symbolizing the merging of orienteering with daily exercise.

Final Logo:

  • Digital Prototype: The App will include a start page, main page, game page, login/sign-up page, event page, and friends' messaging feature.

Summary:

Oringo is a groundbreaking app designed to introduce the world to the exciting realm of orienteering, allowing enthusiasts and newcomers alike to embark on orienteering adventures during their daily walks and runs. Through thoughtful design and incorporation of user-friendly elements, Oringo aims to bridge the gap between a lesser-known sport and a broader audience, inspiring a new wave of orienteering enthusiasts.
